Blog LexiconPeopleAmy - my sister, who is responsible for my love of old QueenDad - not a huge musical influence, but I do occasionally post examples of "Dad music" (see below) Glenn Case, Niveous, William, Tuuur, Woordenaar - other song-a-day bloggers, whom I sometimes reference directly Rabid Garfunkel - Pat, my best friend from college/occasional musical collaborator Rex - my brother, who is responsible for many of my lifetime's musical choices Termscow-orker - It's an alternate term for co-worker. I stole this from Dilbert author Scott Adams.Dad music - artists my father liked when I was much younger, and didn't appreciate until much later in life Funky Friday - Sometimes I post funk tunes on Fridays. I stole the idea from Pat. See also LATFAP. LATFAP - a term used to describe my Love of All Things Funky And Percussive sheet - used in place of "s**t", in the name of uniqueness as well as family-friendliness singwriter - used in place of "singer/songwriter", a term I can't stand singwritarist - used in place of "singer/songwriter/guitarist" Recurring topicsclassic rock radio - Sometimes I will post a song from a prototypical 70s band that often gets played on "classic rock radio", such as Led Zeppelin, Kansas or Boston. My recurring point is that I can still enjoy such music because I don't let classic rock radio ruin it for me.Def Leppard - Probably my least favorite band of all time. I don't care how popular they were. They sucked astronomically hard and always did. Every once in a blue moon I will say as much. enemas and bondage - As a result of this post, this site sometimes gets hits as a result of Google searches having to do with enemas and/or bondage. Yes, it's very unlikely that those searchers find what they are looking for here, but God bless 'em anyway. It's pretty much the only traffic I get. Marquee/Home Premiere Cinema - If I recall correctly, Marquee was a low-rent premium cable channel we had around 1979 or so, and Home Premiere Cinema was the cable subscription service that featured it. On a given day it would run two or three B- or C-grade films repeatedly. But in between films they would play music videos, and that's how I first discovered a few of my posted favorites. MTV - Sure it's a steaming crapfest now, but hey, I'm in my 40s after all and MTV was a huge musical influence, and I often cite it as such. prog - Or "progressive rock", it's that genre of music played by very adept musicians (bands like Yes, King Crimson and Genesis) and largely considered inaccessible, especially by music critics. I don't like music critics, nor do I like the notion that rock music and virtuosity can't co-exist. This topic seems to come up a lot. smooth jazz - Um, yeah, like Kenny G and such, that junk you often hear in doctor's offices. It gets called "smooth jazz" a lot, although it's really neither smooth nor jazzy. I'm am not a fan of that stuff and often say so. XM satellite radio - I used to post songs constantly after hearing them for the first time on an XM channel, usually Music Lab (prog), Fred (80s alternative), Fungus (punk/ska) or Beyond Jazz (modern jazz). Now the service is called SiriusXM, all of those channels are gone and their genre-specific replacements are all subpar, and I'm not discovering cool new stuff so much anymore. |
Introduction
Some of my online cohorts at the Songfight community decided to create blogs to highlight songs they like. I am now doing it as well, because I am a total lemming.
Songfight is a weekly songwriting competition based on titles provided by the site's administrators. I post there under the handle "Albatross." Go check it out. It's a gas. My Own Noise
Can't sing my way out of a wet paper bag, but I play a few instruments with varying degrees of proficiency. As such, sometimes I record my own music. You can hear it here.
