View Article  "Teenage Enema Nurses in Bondage" - Killer Pu**y

YES!  YES!  YES!  HALLE-FREAKING-LUJAH!!  This is absolutely one of my very favorite songs of all time and I've been dying to post it ever since this blog started, but I could never find a video or a free (not to mention guilt-free) MP3 link.  Now thanks to a megasuperwonderful YouTube user named "rigormichael", I can share in the glory that is Killer Pu**y's "Teenage Enema Nurses in Bondage", from the album Bikini Wax (as well as a few 80's compilations).

See?  Sometimes patience really does pay off.

View Article  "All Women Are Insane" - Mentors

I came across this Mentors tune while doing yesterday's post and absolutely cracked up.  I had heard of the band, but this was my initial exposure to their catalog.  I just totally broke up over the mere idea that any group would have the absolute chutzpah to record a song like this.  That's beautiful, man.

As an aside, remember the PMRC hearings from the mid-80's?  You may recall the testimony from that preacher who quoted that song that went something like "smell my anal vapor/your face is my toilet paper."  Yeah, that was also a Mentors song, called "Golden Shower."

Long live rock 'n roll.

Don't really know what to say about this song, except that it rocks really hard.  And that Double Nickels on the Dime (1984) is one of those albums everyone should own.

View Article  "Alone Again Or" - The Damned

I posted some of my favorite cover songs a few months back.  Another one is this Damned rendition of Love's 1967 standard "Alone Again Or", from that Damned album Anything (1986).

When I first heard this song on the radio, I lost my Damned mind.  Even though that Damned album was a Damned critical and commercial disappointment and received mixed reviews from those Damned fans, I love that Damned record.

And I love that Damned Love song.

View Article  "Feet Don't Fail Me Now" - Utopia

Ever seen AL-TV?  It's a recurring show on VH-1 (was on MTV originally) featuring "Weird Al" Yankovic, during which the popular parodist endeavors to, in his own words, "take over the airwaves and play the videos *I* wanna watch!"

The earlier AL-TV specials ran for as long as four hours, so Al had time to not only showcase his own videos and original skits, but oddball tunes from other artists as well.  One clip featured on the 1985 special was "Feet Don't Fail Me Now" by the Todd Rundgren-led band Utopia, from their 1982 self-titled album.

Seriously, do goofy videos like this even get made anymore?

OK, looks like I'm back to ol' reliable YouTube after two weeks of being Tube-free.  Click here to watch the video for "Feet Don't Fail Me Now."

As a side note, my brother and I actually had AL-TV T-shirts.  I mention this because it's his birthday today.  Have a good one, Rex!
View Article  "Jungle Exploration" - from Hitman: Codename 47

They just made a movie based on the Hitman series, so here's a track from the original game, Hitman: Codename 47 (2000).

View Article  "Fate" - from Mafia

The third-person shooter Mafia (2002) may very well be the greatest computer game I have ever played.  It's similar to the Grand Theft Auto series, but better.  It's to GTA as The Godfather is to Scarface.  Dripping with style and polish, this title just reeks of quality in just about every aspect, and if you have the time and the inclination, I can't recommend it enough.

Except for those save checkpoints.  Curse those save checkpoints.

Anyway, the game's soundtrack features several jazz-oriented period pieces from the 30's, as well as a terrific original score composed by Vladimir Šimůnek and performed by the Bohemia Symphonic Orchestra.  One of the top orchestral tracks is the haunting "Fate."

View Article  "Approaching Ragnarok" - from Rune

In the third-person hack and slash game Rune (2000), you play a young Viking warrior hell bent on preventing a rogue Viking from unleashing a horde of mutated zombies (excuse me, I meant dishonored) and ravaging the world in the name of the mischievous god Loki.

Even though it was fairly linear and wasn't exactly revolutionary in terms of game play, it was visceral and atmospheric, and ultimately satisfying.  And if you're gonna have a soundtrack to accompany Nordic badassery, tracks like "Approaching Ragnarok" would seem to fit the bill.

Introduction
Some of my online cohorts at the Songfight community decided to create blogs to highlight songs they like. I am now doing it as well, because I am a total lemming.

Songfight is a weekly songwriting competition based on titles provided by the site's administrators. I post there under the handle "Albatross." Go check it out. It's a gas.
My Own Noise
Can't sing my way out of a wet paper bag, but I play a few instruments with varying degrees of proficiency. As such, sometimes I record my own music. You can hear it here.

Latest song: "Take Five" (Dave Brubeck Quartet cover)
