In the third-person hack and slash game Rune (2000), you play a young Viking warrior hell bent on preventing a rogue Viking from unleashing a horde of mutated zombies (excuse me, I meant dishonored) and ravaging the world in the name of the mischievous god Loki.
Even though it was fairly linear and wasn't exactly revolutionary in terms of game play, it was visceral and atmospheric, and ultimately satisfying. And if you're gonna have a soundtrack to accompany Nordic badassery, tracks like "Approaching Ragnarok" would seem to fit the bill.
