View Article  "Rock You Up" - Romantics

I'm sure you've heard "What I Like About You" about a billion times by now.  Commercials, sporting events, it's been everywhere.  It's a song that our culture really needs to bury for good.

Now, I realize that calling the Romantics a one-hit wonder is kind of iffy, since "Talking In Your Sleep" was a modest hit for the band as well and shows up in a lot of 80's-type compilation CDs and what not.  But that's not the song you hear in beer ads and between innings at ballgames.  I like beer and ballgames.  But I'm sick of friggin' "What I Like About You" already.

"But Max, it's got such a great beat!  And I love that guitar!"  Well, if you'll allow me to get all pompous and indignant and such, I think "Rock You Up" has a BETTER beat and BETTER guitar.  So nyah.

This is part of a week-long series on different songs from well-known "one-hit wonders."
View Article  "Huh? They did a song other than _________???"
This week on the MaxBlog, I am highlighting artists known primarily for one song only, and showcasing additional (and in many cases, better) titles from their catalogs.

It bothers me when artists or bands I like get labeled as "one-hit wonders" just because they happen to have only one song that succeeds commercially.  I mean, by that definition, Jimi Hendrix and Frank Zappa were one-hit wonders.  Often that term is merely a convenient label borne out of ignorance.  So all this week we are looking past artists' signature tunes and delving a bit deeper into their histories for gems you may have missed or forgotten.

Introduction
Some of my online cohorts at the Songfight community decided to create blogs to highlight songs they like. I am now doing it as well, because I am a total lemming.

Songfight is a weekly songwriting competition based on titles provided by the site's administrators. I post there under the handle "Albatross." Go check it out. It's a gas.
My Own Noise
Can't sing my way out of a wet paper bag, but I play a few instruments with varying degrees of proficiency. As such, sometimes I record my own music. You can hear it here.

Latest song: "Take Five" (Dave Brubeck Quartet cover)
