Avenue Q is a somewhat racy Broadway musical largely billed as a more adult-oriented version of Sesame Street.  For example, two of the supporting male characters parallel Bert and Ernie directly - except one of them is gay and secretly has a crush on the other.  An obvious Cookie Monster knockoff proclaims his love of Internet pornography.  And a human character and a "monster" character have sex with each other with an intense alcohol-fueled fervor.

"How totally low-brow!" you might say.  Perhaps, but that didn't stop Avenue Q from taking home Tony awards for Best Musical and Best Original Score in 2004, as well as nominations for the director and both the male and female leads.  However risque the subject matter, the songs are wonderfully written and the performances are outstanding.

One personal favorite is "There Is Life Outside Your Apartment."  Here, the male lead, Princeton, is depressed and down on his luck and decides to stay in for the night, and his friends try to cheer him up by taking him out for a night on the town.
