View Article  "Got the Time" - Anthrax

When one of your favorite speed metal bands covers a song from one of your favorite individual artists, attention must be paid.  Even though I was otherwise disappointed in the 1990 Anthrax album Persistence of Time, they rocked the hell out of this classic Joe Jackson tune.

This is part of a week-long series on cover songs.

I'm posting some of my most beloved cover songs this week.  For the two or three people in the world who don't know what a cover is, it's when a band records or performs a song originally written and recorded by another.

Nearly all bands, to one extent or another, have been cover bands.  Often a group gets gigs solely by virtue of playing covers.  Some artists make their living playing covers in unusual or contradictory styles, like Dread Zeppelin and Richard Cheese.  Even established bands such as Rush, the Ramones and Metallica have recorded whole albums of covers.

Plus, cover songs are just fun to do.  Putting your own spin on a tune you already love is a blast.  So here are some examples of artists having a blast doing songs done by someone else.

Introduction
Some of my online cohorts at the Songfight community decided to create blogs to highlight songs they like. I am now doing it as well, because I am a total lemming.

Songfight is a weekly songwriting competition based on titles provided by the site's administrators. I post there under the handle "Albatross." Go check it out. It's a gas.
My Own Noise
Can't sing my way out of a wet paper bag, but I play a few instruments with varying degrees of proficiency. As such, sometimes I record my own music. You can hear it here.
