I have no problem admitting that I like early Duran Duran. I'm always tempted to call it a "guilty pleasure", but to me that term describes something you enjoy even though you know it lacks merit. I think there are many genuinely good songs and performances on the first two Duran releases. Their second album, Rio, is a huge favorite. To me, at least, it wasn't until they got too big for their britches and wound up on every preteen girl's bedroom wall that they started to suck. "The Reflex" was lame and "Wild Boys" was garbage.
Anyway, a song I adore from their 1981 self-titled debut record is "Girls On Film." As you'd expect from a title like that, the video is pretty racy. But there was a much racier version released to home video, with full frontal female nudity and everything. I rented it, of course, and watched it one evening. I was around sixteen. While it was running, my mom walked in the room and absolutely freaked out - because she thought I was watching MTV. Yes, for a brief moment, she truly believed that basic cable had taken to showing explicit footage of people's naughtiest bits. "This is pornographic!", she exclaimed. She seemed relieved when I told her I was watching a videotape, and she was at least cool enough to let me finish watching it.
Actually, I think I watched it about three or four times, but who's counting...
