I decided to fly solo for the 2005 Gift of Music (see Monday's entry for more information on the GoM).  The list I received came from one Luke Henley, and one of his selections was the opening track from Frank Zappa's first album - "Hungry Freaks, Daddy" from Freak Out! (1966).  As a long time Zappaholic, that was a pretty easy choice.

My original plan was to do my own extended guitar lead during the solo break.  So, with the deadline imminent and after some futzing around, it finally dawned on me - I can't play lead guitar to save my life.  Panic-stricken, I came up with the totally cornball idea to use snippets from a Denis Leary routine instead.  Leary is a rather profane stand-up comic, and he had a spirited bit about overweight people.  Although the song has nothing to do with overeating, it seemed apropos for a song called "Hungry Freaks", especially since he exclaims "... freak!!" in the middle of it.

Hey, ya gotta make do with whatever you're given.

Some dork - vocals, rhythm and lead guitars, bass, drums, harmonica, mixing

This is part of a week-long series on songs I have covered.
