![]() As you could guess, Moog Cookbook makes music primarily with Moog synthesizers. They are best known for two cover albums they recorded in the 90s - 1995's The Moog Cookbook features remakes of some popular "alternative" hits of the era, while 1997's Ye Olde Space Band contains versions of 70s classic rock staples. The opening track from the former is Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun." As you watch this, you may think "man, you'd have to be stoned out of your mind to enjoy this." I am not of that belief. ![]() Easily my favorite track from Sting's Dream of the Blue Turtles (1985). That band he put together for that project was just volcanic, I really wish they'd stayed together longer. YouTube live performance, from the Bring on the Night documentary Friday, March 28

![]() Just got back from seeing my brother, so this entry will be quick and dirty. So, um, oh hey, I dig this David Bowie song. OK, that was quick, what about dirty? Uh, well, this song was co-written by Iggy Pop, and he's kinda dirty, I guess. Watch the music video on YouTube Read the Wikipedia article Thursday, March 27

![]() I'm logging in from my brother's place in the south San Francisco Bay area. I asked him what song I should post, and he picked this one. From his own words: "This was my favorite song to play when I first built a distortion box for my electric guitar in 1983. I love the energy." ![]() Think you've never heard this? El-wrongo! More commonly called the "Funeral March", the opening melody from this Chopin piece has been referenced pretty routinely for decades, usually when death is involved. I filled out my state and federal tax forms yesterday, so this selection seems appropriate. YouTube live performance of "Sonata No. 2: III. Marche Funebre", performed at the White House by Vladimir Horowitz in 1978. Tuesday, March 25

![]() This Concrete Blonde song is sort of a holdover from my "good songs from bad albums" theme from a while back. I love "Ghost of a Texas Ladies Man", but the rest of Walking in London (1992) was a pretty major letdown. I lost that CD at some point, I have reason to believe it was stolen by someone who was in my apartment spraying for pests. I never sought to reacquire it. ![]() Pretty busy at the job today, so I will make this quick. But don't worry, I am not gonna go all half-cocked and post another new wave tune from around 1980. Wait, yes I am. Video for "Echo Beach" on YouTube Wikipedia entry |
Introduction
Some of my online cohorts at the Songfight community decided to create blogs to highlight songs they like. I am now doing it as well, because I am a total lemming.
Songfight is a weekly songwriting competition based on titles provided by the site's administrators. I post there under the handle "Albatross." Go check it out. It's a gas. My Own Noise
Can't sing my way out of a wet paper bag, but I play a few instruments with varying degrees of proficiency. As such, sometimes I record my own music. You can hear it here.
