In 1997, Joe signed with the Sony Classical label and released Symphony No. 1, for which he received a Grammy.

However, that wasn't the first time he'd ventured away from the pop/rock format - he released a predominantly classical-sounding album ten years earlier with 1987's Will Power.  But in addition to the orchestral segments, that release also included an outstanding piano solo piece called "Nocturne."
