By the time Soul Rotation was released in 1992, our dairy-delivering friends had switched record labels and seemed to make a concerted effort to produce a more mature and contemporary sound. Rodney Anonymous essentially became the group's keyboard player and not the principal lead singer. The songs were more introspective and abstract and generally less, well, wacky.
It turned out to be kind of a letdown. I mean, I have nothing against growing and maturing, but can you really have a Milkmen album without Rodney ranting about things like hippies, retards and Charles Nelson Reilly?
Still, Soul Rotation has some strong tracks. "The Conspiracy Song" and "How It's Gonna Be" are terrific, and I'm also fond of "If I Had a Gun." I managed to find a YouTube vid for that one, with some nice clay animation. So here it is.
