I've talked often about how my older siblings influenced my musical choices. Well, those choices weren't always musical. For instance, we all loved those old Steve Martin stand-up albums. We listened to Let's Get Small, A Wild and Crazy Guy and Comedy is Not Pretty until we had every joke, every gag, hell, every word ingrained into our collective subconscious. Even now, about 30 years after the fact, we still refer to these old routines. No explanations needed, ever. I'll say something like "Fred's Bank!" and we immediately chortle. And it's been especially illuminating for me in recent years to hear these albums again and actually get the jokes that went over my head when I was 9 or 10. Like "is it OK to yell 'movie' in a crowded firehouse?" or his whole bit about singing from the "diaphragm." Oh, OK, I get it. Haha! All hail adulthood.
Of course, in addition to his comedic talents, Steve is one hell of a musician. So here is an actual song from Let's Get Small, called "Grandmother's Song."
So help me, if we had owned about 3 or 4 cats, I would have tried to juggle them.
