Thought #1: I had pretty much exhausted my supply of early 80s new wave faves. Thought #2: Holy crap, I haven't put up "Favourite Shirts" yet! Thought #3: Speaking of shirts, perhaps I shouldn't have worn this one today. Thought #4: Blecch, too many grounds in the coffee this morning. Thought #5: Dammit, I do not have AADD!! "Red Sector A" - Rush

Several options for Rush songs for this theme. I could have picked "Red Barchetta", but that's one of those tired Rush standards I don't care if I ever hear again. "Red Tide" is a pretty meh tune from an equally meh album. Grace Under Pressure provides a couple of options - "Red Sector A" and "Red Lenses." The latter is a passable yet hardly spectacular album filler track, so I am going with the former. If any music critics are reading this (and they're not, just humor me here), this song is just a little over five minutes long and it is not based on the writings of Ayn Rand. You're probably assuming the opposite, so there you go.Hear "Red Sector A" on YouTube.Live performance from the Show of Hands concert video. This is part of a week-long series on "red" songs.

Seriously, what is it with these songs about red lights?Anyhoo, I've discussed the Keep Your Distance album before. Again, I hate this band's name. I don't even like typing it. Still, some pretty good stuff contained within. Tough to describe really, it's like it has a genuine smooth jazziness that "smooth jazz" doesn't have. You and I may have both already stuffed ourselves with lots of greasy and unhealthy food by the time you read this. Hey, that's one reason why we love our holidays! Don't know exactly when, but I'll be back to dispense more redness at some point. Until then, go eat some more! And watch some more football!Hear "Red Lights" on YouTube. This is part of a week-long series on "red" songs.

"Red Light" - U2
by
Max
on Wed 25 Nov 2009 12:16 PM PST
It's not just that there are a ton of songs that contain "red." Apparently a great many of them are specifically entitled "Red Light." If I had had enough foresight to realize this, that could have been the weekly theme itself. Probably a bit too late for that, but at least I can put up this one from U2. I've posted tracks from War before, so it seems obvious. It's like I have to constantly remind myself that this is what this band used to sound like. U2 has been around for so long and have undergone so many style shifts that I have to slot War every now and then and say "This is what got me into them. This is what made me think they were one of the coolest bands around when I was a high school dimwit." Look, I'm not here to pass judgment on which phases of U2's career are "good", "better", "crappy" or what have you. If you think the Zooropa album is awesome and terrific or that the Atomic Bomb one is the beez kneez, that's OK. I just enjoyed the band's output a lot more when they were putting out the likes of Boy and War.It's like I amicably "divorced" U2 at some point. Except I didn't get half of everything they own.Hear "Red Light" on YouTube. This is part of a week-long series on "red" songs.

"Red Light" - Wall of Voodoo

I posted a song from this same album (the long OOP Dark Continent) fairly recently. If you can find a CD, it still won't come cheaply, but it looks as if it can now be had at a more tolerable dollar amount. I suppose the rabid fan collector types (read: suckers, like myself) have bought out most of the outrageously expensive copies and they are starting to come down in price.Although, you can still find it listed at around $150 or so. If this thing ever does go back into print, some people are gonna be pissed.UPDATE: One of my industry inside sources (i.e. Pat) has informed me that Dark Continent was, in fact, reprinted earlier this month as a 2-in-1 release along with Call of the West. Well hell, I guess that may explain why the rarer discs are cheaper now. So, if you own neither of those outstanding platters, then do yourself a favor and BUY BUY BUY BUY!!!Watch a fan-made video for "Red Light" on YouTube. This is part of a week-long series on "red" songs.

"Red House" - Jimi Hendrix

I suppose being able to play the blues well is pretty much a requirement for being a guitar hero. And I mean a real guitar hero, not the plastic button kind. This Hendrix chap, yeah, I guess he was half-way decent at it.Watch a fanvid for "Red House" on YouTube. Make haste, yonder YouTube traveler - the Hendrix estate can be downright Warnerian in its enforcement of IP rights. This is part of a week-long series on "red" songs.

I guess "amaranth" doesn't have quite the same zing...

We'll all be seeing red this week. There seems to be a crapton of songs containing "red", so we'll see some of them here. Blue, green and yellow don't seem to be represented nearly as much in Songtitledom. Why? Who knows. Perhaps it's because of all the songs having to do with blood, prostitution and communism. Another discussion topic for my highly intellectual, well-reasoned, non-existent audience.
Don't worry, I won't use some lame red-related gimmick in my posts. I am so above that.

Introduction
Some of my online cohorts at the Songfight community decided to create blogs to highlight songs they like. I am now doing it as well, because I am a total lemming.
Songfight is a weekly songwriting competition based on titles provided by the site's administrators. I post there under the handle "Albatross." Go check it out. It's a gas.
My Own Noise
Can't sing my way out of a wet paper bag, but I play a few instruments with varying degrees of proficiency. As such, sometimes I record my own music. You can hear it here.
