"Bohemian Polka" - "Weird Al" Yankovic
by
Max
on Mon 31 Aug 2009 12:21 PM PDT
Whoa, I've posted sixteen Weird Al tunes, but not a single polka? Holy cow, how can that be? I love Weird Al's polkas. A lot. Some people say he should stop doing them. Those people should be drawn and quartered. And then have their severed limbs tarred and feathered. Usually he does medleys of several songs at a time when he busts out the polkas. In this case, he's doing one song and one song only - the Queen classic "Bohemian Rhapsody" in its entirety. Sweet. Music just doesn't get any better than this. Watch a fanvid for "Bohemian Polka" on YouTube. The user disabled comments for this video, apparently some people think Al "ruined" this song. THOSE are the ones who should be drawn and quartered.

"Combat 3" - from Heroes of Might and Magic 2

And my two week iPod adventure ends the same way it began - with a track from a computer game. I really do have quite a bit of game music. Remember when I posted two weeks worth? There was a time several years ago, around '99 or so, when I went out of my way to find tracks from games, whether I actually played them or not. I'd go to FilePlanet or what have you and snag anything decent I could find. Remember, this was before the Internet had really taken off as a viable method for discovering new music easily and quickly with things like YouTube and MySpace. Terrestrial radio was total garbage. Satellite radio didn't exist yet. Neither did Songfight. MTV was, well, MTV, meaning it was a complete joke. But there I was, digging on the sounds of Quake 2 and Unreal Tournament. Then I'd happen upon online gaming articles referencing the soundtracks to the likes of Interstate '76 and Outlaws. Eventually I just said hey, if these games are gonna be the only medium through which I hear stuff I like, so be it. So now I have this modest but still significant collection of music from computer games, and my little shuffling jukebox seems constantly drawn to it. I wonder how it hasn't pulled more from it these past two weeks. Hear "Combat 3" on YouTube. I must say, the Tube of You has been surprisingly friendly to my gaming-related submissions. "Catatonic" - Slayer
by
Max
on Sat 29 Aug 2009 02:07 PM PDT
Now the iPod wants to get its thrash on. You know those bootleg Russian MP3 download sites? There are/were a whole bunch of them. The URLs all end in ".ru" and you can get songs for around nine cents a pop. They have these long, detailed disclaimers about how legit they are and how they're wholly on the up and up. Oh, puh-lease. Nonetheless, I used one once. I was desperate to find a particular song, and that seemed to be the only way to get it. OK, I'll confess - the song was "Soft Core", which would later become the very first song ever posted here. So I gave this seedy MP3 service ten bucks, and I snagged a CRAPLOAD of stuff. A tenner goes a long way when you're only ponying up anywhere from seven to eleven cents per track. Included in that haul was the 2006 Slayer album Christ Illusion in its entirety. Comparing it to the genre-defining Reign in Blood seems pointless, but it's still a pretty cool record all things considered. It appears as if the Russian web site I used no longer exists, but there are still plenty of them. Don't go there, though. Go to Amazon or iTunes where you belong. "Budapest By Blimp" - Thomas Dolby
by
Max
on Fri 28 Aug 2009 12:31 PM PDT
Oh man, my iPod Touch just has the most exquisite of tastes. I love this track dearly. Well, OK, you're always gonna say that your iPod has good taste, because whatever is on it, you put it there. Actually I was all set to have it pick another song because I could have sworn I had posted this one already. I knew I had visited the Aliens Ate My Buick album before, having put up "Hot Sauce" twice, but I was a wee bit taken aback when I realized I had not yet posted "Budapest." Well, this is probably my numero uno track from Aliens, and my little musical guardian angel with the belt clip saw fit to feed me a nudging reminder. Really, these iPods are pretty nifty. I avoided portable MP3 players forever because they seemed like such a fad (and because I insisted on having my music stay uncompressed), but I'm totally on board with them now. Long live my touch-screened saviour. Hear "Budapest By Blimp" on Dolby's MySpace page.Hear a live performance on Last.fm.This is part of a two week-long series on songs chosen at random by my iPod.

"The Girl is Mine" - Richard Cheese
by
Max
on Thu 27 Aug 2009 11:34 AM PDT
It makes sense that the little music playing doohickey would play a Richard Cheese tune. It holds five of the Dickmeister's albums in their entirety, including Aperitif for Destruction. The original song was, of course, a Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney duet. Here, Richard is trading barbs with one Stephen Hawking. Well, sort of. I remember when this tune (the original, I mean) was a hit in the 80s. I thought to myself, "yeah, this tune is nice and all, but do you know what would be really bitchen? Have it performed by a Vegas-style lounge singer and an extremely intelligent physicist with a voice box. Now that would be wacky." No really, I did. "The Rope Song" - Devo
by
Max
on Wed 26 Aug 2009 12:31 PM PDT
My iPod is insane. I mean, do you REALLY want to hear what Devo sounded like before they were ever signed to a major label? It was pretty far out there. Not that that's a bad thing. There's something to be said for any group willing to think outside the proverbial box. Even though I'm not real big on their "artist" attitudes (seriously, these guys should really be thankful they even landed a record
deal at all and stop bitching about everyone who ever saw fit to give
them one, it's not like they invented the freaking wheel), I do enjoy most of the band's catalog. I've posted several Devo songs before, so posting this oddball demo-quality tune isn't much of a stretch. They may very well have been true "pioneers", regardless of how often they tell us so. "Get a Room" - Vandals
by
Max
on Tue 25 Aug 2009 01:16 PM PDT
There it is! The Vandals song we all knew was coming. This iPod is pretty damned reliable after all. This song comes down on overly shameless public displays of, uh, affection. Right on, brothers. There's a place for that. Sitting next to me in a restaurant or whatever ain't it. Giants-related postscript: You can go suck it. You're done. Yes, I'm saying fuck repeatedly and not censoring it.
Don't care.
Fuck you.

Introduction
Some of my online cohorts at the Songfight community decided to create blogs to highlight songs they like. I am now doing it as well, because I am a total lemming.
Songfight is a weekly songwriting competition based on titles provided by the site's administrators. I post there under the handle "Albatross." Go check it out. It's a gas.
My Own Noise
Can't sing my way out of a wet paper bag, but I play a few instruments with varying degrees of proficiency. As such, sometimes I record my own music. You can hear it here.
